Trauma Informed Care

Trauma-informed care is an approach to healthcare and social services that recognizes and responds to the impact of trauma on individuals. It involves understanding the prevalence and effects of trauma and integrating this knowledge into the policies, practices, and interactions of service providers. The goal of trauma-informed care is to create an environment that promotes healing, resilience, and recovery for individuals who have experienced trauma.

This model of dealing with trauma is based on key principles, including “Safety,” which ensures physical and emotional safety, and “Trustworthiness and Transparency,” which require service providers to communicate openly, honestly, and transparently, establishing clear expectations and boundaries. This model is also based on “Empowerment and Collaboration,” which recognizes the importance of partnering with individuals, valuing their voice and choices, and involving them in the decision-making process regarding their care and treatment.

This model needs to be implemented in a culturally sensitive manner, respecting cultural differences and recognizing that the impact of culture on an individual’s experience of trauma varies significantly. Most importantly, service providers will avoid any behaviors and practices that could potentially be Re-traumatizing. Service providers are mindful of potential triggers and create an environment that avoids re-enacting or exacerbating traumatic experiences. Also, Trauma-informed care involves collaboration and coordination across different service providers and systems. This ensures that individuals receive comprehensive and integrated care that addresses their unique needs and goals. Finally, by implementing trauma-informed principles, service providers aim to promote healing, resilience, and recovery while reducing the risk of further harm to individuals who have experienced trauma.
